Strange Things...

February 24th 2007, 10:36pm

Since James' new job has supplied him with a new laptop, we're going to use his old laptop and desktop computers to conglomerate our music collections. We'll be able to access our music without having them take up all the space they currently do on our own computers. While looking for some album covers, I found a website that shows the worst album covers ever. These two were the funniest and strangest. Actually, the one with the chick is disturbing. But interesting at the same time, that some one would think that was a good album cover...

Tuesday was Pancake Day. AKA Shrove Tuesday. All I know is we get to eat pancakes, which are actually crepes. So we went to Chris and Helen's place, brought a few toppings of our own (strawberries & vanilla ice cream, canned peaches with whipped cream and a chicken/mushroom/bacon mix with a lovely pesto cream sauce), and I made blueberry pancakes with blueberry sauce as well. Mmmmm. Pancakes!

As well, my sister Aubrey sent me a funny email with things that students have written on exam papers, which made James and I look at British versions of the same thing, which are also appalling and hilarious. Makes you contemplate home schooling!

We went to a concert Thursday night (after raiding the penny jar and amassing 6 quid worth of tuppence and pennies) featuring our friends from our weekly Monday pub quiz, l-r: Matt, Badgerman, Dave and Tim, otherwise known as [dweeb]. Well, Dave is the one from the band who comes out most often, with Tim taking second place in attendance! Michael, Chris and Helen round off Jeremy & the Paxmen, and we have a great time. But I'm getting sidetracked. The concert was a lot of fun, the boys are crazy! If you want to check them out, they've got loads of gigs coming up... That is, if you're in the UK!

Exciting news for me is my new job! I found out this morning that I DEFINITELY have the Senior Tent Sales job at GO Outdoors, which is really exciting. Mainly because I have a job, finally, but also because I really think this is a job I'll enjoy! And I start Monday! YAY!!!!!

Our Saturday started off fairly normal. We watched CSI and ER, went to the market to pick up veg for the week, and came back home to tidy up. I walked back down to Chris and Helen's to pick up my measuring cup (I'd left it there after pancake night. I'd just left their place when Chris shouted for me to come back. James was on the phone and had sliced his hand open. He was washing a glass, and a piece fell off of it, and he opened a nice gash in his hand. So I had to drive him to the hospital, tackling the ring road for the first time! We got there, and a film crew spotted James with a tea towel wrapped about his hand, and they thought he looked interesting. They were doing a segment on Accident & Emergency wards and the care you receive, all that. So we said they could film us, and they did a few spots with us; a bit to say why we were in the ER, they recorded when we went into triage (I couldn't look at the cut much, it made me queasy!), before the doctor came to stitch James up, and after we had been helped. We were there for about 4.5 hours. So right now I'm very hungry, and I still have to tidy. And all by myself now, too! Boo hoo! He got five stitches, which can't get wet, and he has to get them taken out in a week. But on the plus side, we got to see an x-ray of his hand!

Don't you just live the enchanted life. Married, starring in movies, woo, Britain has it all. Congrats on the job. Sorry you are a loner for dishes, but at least it's just the 2 of you and not eight kids:)

Yes, Palmer. Our lives are just drama, drama, drama! I'm all for NOT having to go to the hospital again. Luckily James wasn't seriously injured! I wouldn't have known how to get to the hospital from our place if he hadn't been able to look at the map while I drove. Eek! And I am thankful that it's just us, dishes wise! Except we're having company today, a couple from church and their two kids... :D

Oh, and the picture of the x-ray? That's REALLY James' hand. If you look closely you'll see a pointer (like the one on a computer) in one place. They were looking to make sure he didn't have glass in the cut. I was teasing him that he's on his computer so much that his bones have mouse pointer marks growing into them! :D

I guess you can't say your life is boring....!

Congrats on the job!

The grammatical incorrectness of the Swede album makes me cringe. I have a thing for grammar :)

Hey Nomi, though I'd add a comment to your blog too! The Beast is an '85 GTI 1.8 8v... it was pretty gutless, but that was due to the timing being out on my car...got that adjusted as well as lowered the car 40mm all around. I also got some sebring alloys for it. I'll be painting those black and once I get a summer out of the tires I got with the rims, I'll use them as winters and get something really nice for the summer! I should link up your blog on mine and vice versa! Later!

Paul

Valentines Day and beyond!

February 19th 2007, 3:15pm

Happy Belated Valentine's Day to everyone!

I hope you had an enjoyable day on the 14th. It was nice for James and I to actually be in the same place for the first time for Valentine's Day! Prior to this year, he's been in England while I've either been in Prince George or Calgary. So it was nice to have our first married Valentines Day and our first Valentine's Day together! He brought me home lilies, which I love, and the smell of them is still filling the room. Oh, and a nice card, too! We spent the evening in with a nice curry, a lovely bottle of wine and watched Sabrina (the original with Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, don't bother with the Harrison Ford remake!). Ah... So nice and relaxing and romantic!

I had dropped off my CV this past week at a few places (Curriculum Vitae, it's what they call resumes over here), and got a call on Thursday from a local outdoors store that they wanted me for an interview. By the sounds of it, I've got the job, I'm just waiting for the call back! James is happy, cause he wouldn't mind me getting a discount! ;) So pray that I get the job! By the sounds of things, I'd have a good shot at moving up the ladder, too. :D

Last, but not least, congratulations to Andrew and Sara on the arrival of Elizabeth Gabriella Dawn on Saturday morning! I can't wait to see pictures!

I've also done some updates on my site, if it has escaped you. There is now a page for recipes. I'll try and add new things that James and I come up with, or if you have requests for a dish I used to make for you, please ask. Let me know if you'd like to add recipes as well, it requires a username and password that I can provide for you. I'd love to exchange some dishes with you! As well, I've added a page with links to various friends' and aquaintances' blogs and websites. You get there by clicking on either Asterix & Obelix, Tintin & Snowy or Calvin & Hobbes. There are also baby tickers there to keep track of who's due when! Who's next to be added?

Our very own blizzard?

February 8th 2007, 9:48pm

Well, we had the "heavy snow" land on our front door today. We woke up to soft snowflakes drifting down to the ground. Since snow tires aren't found over here, James, Chris & Ralph were thinking it likely they'd work from home. Alas, Rollo has a Skoda with traction control, so off to work went Rollo, James and Chris. Ralph managed to stay at home somehow! I stayed nice and cozy in my bed after peeking out at the snow. Helen gave me a call around 10, and we went into town shortly after. We went shopping for clothes for her, and I picked up some great DVDs (exchanges are lovely things!). Then we walked over to the old cathedral, were there was this cute little squirrel. He was dashing about, trying to find seeds that had been buried under the snow. So I put an animation together with some of the pictures I took of it! It made me smile, hope it brightens your day too! Oh, and the "heavy snow" was about TWO INCHES!!!!

It's all relative, eh? Right now the prairies are in the middle of a deep freeze--it's been in the low -20's (but with windchill, it's been between -30 and -40) for over a week now.

You know you miss it.

I love hearing about the mundane things of your life. It is so exoctic knowing that it is occuring in England! I get to paint my house this week I will take some before and after pictures for you.

A&W Rootbeer

February 7th 2007, 9:47pm

Yesterday we drove up to Derby (pronounced Darby) to check out their A&W. James was looking them up on the net before we went up, and we found out that A&W in Canada is a separately owned company than the one in the rest of the world. We both had Deluxe Double Bacon Burgers (they didn't have Mozza burgers or Teen or Grandpa or Mama or Papa or Baby burgers) with fries (which I think were KFC fries, not A&W, since they're in the same restaurant) and onion rings (which didn't taste quite like A&W) and ROOT BEER!!! Which of course was our whole reason for going! And it was bottomless, with a tap you could pour yourself. AND there was a jukebox with free plays!!!!

We had a fun time driving home. We even stopped off at the Peak Rails train station, but it was empty. Unlocked, but empty. Strange. We were wondering if the train was locked up, which it was, but luckily the bathrooms were open! Oh, one more thing. We have a heavy snow warning for tomorrow. When I asked James what the definition of heavy was (this is a genuine British weather warning, not something he or I have made up!), he showed me...

...it's a whopping 10-15cm!!!! Not exactly equivalent to the blizzard Saskatoon was hit with, but the roads will still be crazy over here. No one has snow tires!

Lost, lost, lost!

February 2nd 2007, 7:24pm

I just realized today that my RSS feed reader has not been working properly for some time. I realized this because I was talking to Ang Fast, and was looking at her blog later, and there were items that I didn't know about. Hmmm. The perusal of several sites ensued, and I realized I had fallen sadly behind in many of your lives! So I've been reading this afternoon and have enjoyed catching up on what you've been up to. AND I found some people I hadn't heard anything about for a while.

Oh, along those lines, if anyone is in touch with Rod & Janelle, can you let her know that I need a password so I can keep in touch with her? I don't have an email address for that girl!
